Let’s Get S.M.A.R.T.!

Set Yourself up for Goal Setting Success!
So how’d you do on your goals last year? Did you meet 50% of them? 80% of them? Do you remember what your goals were? A lot has been written on the importance of goal setting and steps to take when writing a goal. Last year’s Rapport Connection blog “
Achieve Your Goals” offers great advice on how to approach your goal setting process.
Many of you may understand the importance of setting and writing down our goals. Often, what gets in the way of achieving your goals isn’t the effort or the commitment to the goal, it’s how your goals are written. S.M.A.R.T. goals are a great way to set you and your team up for success. By using the acronym S.M.A.R.T. you will create goals that you will achieve both in your personal and business life. Let’s take a closer look at what a S.M.A.R.T. goal is:
S = Specific
What is it you want to accomplish? What outcomes do you expect? Who will do it? How will it be done?
M = Measureable
How will you (and others) know you have accomplished the goal? What is the source of your measurement?
A = Agreed Upon
Who are the key stakeholders in the goal? Do they agree to the goal (especially important if you are expecting their involvement or support)?
R = Realistic
Do you have the tools/skills/resources to achieve the goal?
T = Time-based
When do you expect to complete the goal?
Attached is an example of two typical goals that are then re-written as S.M.A.R.T. goals.

Goal setting is an important part of a successful organization. Whether they are personal or team goals, it’s your goals that help guide, direct and align your daily efforts. Get the most out of your goal setting process by making sure the goals you set are properly defined and documented. Using the acronym “S.M.A.R.T.” will put you in the driver’s seat to success by creating goals you will achieve.
“The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them or even seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.”
